Why Fall is a Great Time to Eat Seafood

Psst, if you’ve been waiting until after the crunch of tourist season to treat yourself to a traditional New England seafood dinner — the coast is clear.

Actually, the coast is still dotted with fishing vessels every morning. The difference — now that the annual tide of tourism has begun to ebb — is that there’s more fresh-caught seafood for us year-rounders. More lobster and clams. More swordfish, scallops and oysters.

For reasons not entirely understood or confirmed by science, the onset of autumn can cause a powerful craving for familiar delicacies from the sea. For some, these cravings can be satisfied by a simple cup of piping hot chowder. However, others may require a baked stuffed seafood combo or an entire Admiral’s Platter (our heaping plate of fried haddock, bay scallops, native shrimp and clam strips).

Our fried dinners have been satisfying seafood cravings for generations of families since Ray and Bea Gagner opened the first Weathervane in Kittery back in 1969 — and we always make sure that our menu offers plenty of more health-conscious options too, like broiled haddock, fresh grilled salmon and Maine steamed clams.

When was the last time you treated yourself to a lobster dinner? If you need any extra incentive, don’t forget that — pound for pound — Maine lobster is one of the leanest, healthiest (and tastiest!) proteins to be found. Don’t forget to check out our Wicked Cheap Twins — two lobsters for a wicked cheap price every Thursday!

Since we’re on the topic of irresistible seafood dishes, our culinary team also wants to draw your attention to three special items on our Feature Menu:

  • Oysters on the Half Shell — Fresh shucked oysters sourced from the finest harvest areas. Your server will be happy to tell about each day’s selections.
  • Fresh Grilled Swordfish — This is fresh North Atlantic swordfish, perfectly grilled and topped with garlic-herb butter. Served with local potato and a fresh side.
  • Lobster Mac and Cheese — Mac and cheese is great comfort food, but add fresh Maine lobster meat, bake it with crumbs on top and it goes from great to divine!

Buoyed by strong relationships with fishermen up and down the coast, we never waver from our original promise to serve only the best quality seafood to our guests.

So don’t be alarmed if you are experiencing an annual fall craving for fresh seafood. Simply set a course for your nearest Weathervane and we’ll take care of everything.
